Promoting Beneficial Skin Care and Self-Care Habits in Teenagers

Teens often have specific skin care needs as they return to school this fall. Teenage skincare routines promote healthy behaviors and self-confidence throughout this difficult time.

To maintain a clear complexion and establish good skincare habits, teenage skin needs to be addressed due to hormonal changes, changing schedules, and afterschool activities.

This age group generally has to balance a busy morning and evening schedule with sports and applying many topical medicines for dermatological issues.

A simple morning ritual is essential for a rushed morning. Teens should wash their faces with an oily or dry cleanser.

Even on cloudy days, a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 can block UV radiation. Before sunscreen, add a lightweight moisturizer if needed.

After a full day, evenings provide self-care. Repair and nourish the skin at night. As in the morning, start with a good cleanser.

If wearing makeup or having oilier skin, some may twice cleanse to remove all remnants. Apply topical drugs as suggested by the dermatologist, then moisturize with a skin-type-appropriate moisturizer.

I use La Roche-Posay Effaclar Gel Facial Wash, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Serum, Toleraine Double Repair Matte Face Moisturizer, and Eucerin Oil Control SPF 50 for oily/combination skin.
