Curating my nail looks is nearly a full-time job for me. That is why, during fashion month last spring, I took thorough notes on what to expect for the biggest 2023 autumn nail trends.

Let me present you to gothcore, which is likely to be the biggest autumn beauty trend of 2023 (ahem, it was all over the runways, from Maison Margiela to Dior to Proenza Schouler). It’s a Wednesday with a whiff of early-2000s emo. Try all-over matte-black nails for a simple look, a matte top coat for a touch of edginess, or a mix of both with a sparkly French tip, as shown above.
I began stalking Valentino rockstud heels on Fashionphile after seeing celebrity nail artist Julie Kandalec make these absolutely amazing studded nails for The Blonds fall/winter 2023 runway show. Studs are back. I’ll be doing the same by coating my entire nail with studs (or, you know, slapping on studded press-ons), but I’m sure I’ll add a few stud highlights to my otherwise neutral nails this fall as well.
Yes, we’re heading back to 2010, the year of mustaches and galaxy print. Except that this autumn manicure trend has moved on from backpacks at Hot Topic and nyan cat to multi-chrome, shimmering finishes in deep, jewel-toned colours. Apply a couple different colours and blend them together with a nail brush to achieve a mixed, watercolor look.
I realize dark-red manicure colors for fall are revolutionary, but think of them as a little toned-down version of stark-black, gothcore nails. Plus, there are so many different depths and dimensions to select from, such as the rusty, deep-brownish red shown above, or a violet, berry-toned merlot.
This will be the new “glazed donut” manicure for fall 2023. This mani, dubbed “lip gloss” nails by celebrity nail artist Tom Bachik, features the same dazzling gold finish as Bieber’s iconic nails, but with a matching nude nail paint below. It’s essentially the nail equivalent of outlining your lips with a neutral lip liner and finishing with lip gloss.
Metallic accessories like chains, hoops, and charms are an extra-cool way to adorn your nails. Betina Goldstein, a celebrity nail artist and my favorite person to follow on Instagram, kept her look fresh by applying a sparkly top coat on bare nails before adding chains and pearls. If you want to try this trend at your manicure salon, bring the embellishments you desire with you in case the artist doesn’t have them on hand.
